Our Provenance • The Direct Foundry Collective

Built with purpose. Poured by hands. Sourced with dignity.

Medina Brass was founded on an unyielding principle: authentic architectural hardware should honor the craftspeople who pour the molten metal and the homeowners who live with it every day. We operate as an independent direct bridge between multi-generational sand-casting foundries in Marrakech and design-conscious homes, architects, and interior studios worldwide.

Heritage Craftsmanship

Generations of Sand-Casting in the Marrakech Medina

In the centuries-old metalworking quarters of Marrakech, brass foundry work is not an industrial assembly line—it is a generational discipline practiced by master artisans whose families have worked molten bronze and copper alloys for centuries. Unlike modern die-cast hardware manufactured in high-volume automated plants using disposable molds, every single Medina Brass piece begins as a custom sand flask hand-rammed with fine river silica sand, natural clay binders, and moisture.

The molten alloy is brought to 1,980°F (1,080°C) inside ceramic crucibles over roaring hearths. When the metal reaches radiant liquid gold viscosity, the foundry master pours it steadily by hand into the sand gates. As the metal cools and solidifies within the dense earth, it captures the subtle organic textures of the sand particles, giving each casting a distinct tactile depth and micro-crystalline density that mass-produced die-castings can never replicate.

Once demolded, each piece is individually chiseled, filed, and hand-lathed. Screw holes and mounting flanges are tapped with precision US-standard threads, and the raw surfaces are hand-buffed on natural cotton buffing wheels with Tripoli paste. We apply no artificial chemical varnishes, clear lacquers, or plastic coatings. The metal remains completely alive, raw, and ready to evolve with your home.

The True Story

Why We Chose to Build Medina Brass Independently

Like many independent artisanal brands, our work initially reached customers through major online retail marketplaces. However, as our collections and trade inquiries expanded, we witnessed firsthand how monopolistic algorithms commoditize heirloom craft.

Large corporate platforms frequently impose 30-to-60-day reserve holds on artisan payouts, forcing small foundries to float the substantial upfront costs of pure virgin copper, fuel, and crucible maintenance. Even more damaging are automated marketplace return policies that grant returnless refunds—authorizing buyers to keep heavy, high-value solid brass faucets or custom shower fixtures without returning them, while deducting the entire cost from the artisan workshop.

Medina Brass was established to eliminate that friction completely. By operating our own direct storefront, we provide predictable cash flow and immediate fair payment to our partner foundry workshops. Simultaneously, we eliminate marketplace middleman commissions, allowing us to offer solid 100% architectural brass hardware at fair direct prices without sacrificing craftsmanship or material purity.

Metallurgy & Material Science

The 65/35 Virgin Alloy: Why Living Brass Outlasts Lacquered Pot Metal

The majority of modern commercial bath and kitchen hardware sold in big-box home improvement stores is cast from inexpensive zamak (zinc alloy) or hollow pot metal coated with a microscopic electroplated brass film measuring less than 0.2 microns thick. Within months of exposure to steam, citrus acids, or daily hand contact, that thin plating scratches or breaks down, exposing the grayish base metal beneath, which oxidizes into powdery white zinc corrosion.

Medina Brass fixtures are cast exclusively from pure binary virgin architectural brass: 65% copper and 35% zinc. This specific alloy ratio delivers the optimal balance of tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and deep golden color warmth. Because our hardware is solid homogeneous metal through and through, it contains zero surface coatings that can flake, blister, peel, or craze over time.

Furthermore, the high copper content imparts natural antimicrobial oligodynamic properties. Laboratory testing demonstrates that pure copper-brass alloys naturally destroy over 99.9% of bacteria, molds, and viruses within 2 to 4 hours of surface contact. As our unlacquered hardware is touched by hands and exposed to ambient air, it undergoes a natural oxidation cycle, developing an exquisite antique bronze patina that deepens with age.
